Happy St. Patrick's Day from Terror in the Corn! ... See MoreSee Less

Happy St. Patricks Day from Terror in the Corn!
Terror in the Corn

It's Thursday, and you know what that means! It's Meet the Character Thursday! Every Thursday we will be profiling a different resident of Raven's Gulch. Today, we profile Penelope of the Corn!

Penelope felt like she was born out in the cornfields near Raven's Gulch. Her family were corn farmers by trade and they owned the vast majority of the fields. She grew up running in the rows, playing hide and seek with her countless brothers, sisters, and cousins, as well as her many aunts and uncles. It took a large family to accomplish all the work necessary to run not only a farm, but multiple farms, and if she had nothing else, she had a large family. There wasn't a corn farmer around these parts that she wasn't related to in some way, shape, or form, either by blood or marriage.

When the Wells Twins came to town and opened up their mortuary service, Penelope took little notice. When they opened up their eponymous hotel, however, Penelope began taking trips to town far more often. Having grown up on cornhusk mats in a crowded shanty house, Penelope felt like a princess in the luxury of a feather bed. Indoor bathrooms felt like a modern miracle to her. And it turned out the bar downstairs was a great place for her to hang out and meet people.

That's where she met her love, Kris Kreaper. He was a hard working farm hand who she had seen around from time to time on one of her family's farms or another for some time, but it wasn't until she sat down that night at the bar with him and had a couple of drinks that she truly felt anything for him. Willing to do almost anything to spend another night in one of those fluffy feather beds upstairs, Penelope convinced Kris to get them a room. After that night, she showed Kreaper her favorite hiding spot in the corn fields, the one nobody ever bothered her in. Secret trysts in the corn became their thing.

The night of Dumitra's spell, Penelope had plans to meet Kris in their usual location. Her uncle wouldn't let her leave until the butter was finished churning, however, so she churned faster than she'd ever churned before, angry that her chores were keeping her from uniting with her love. She cursed her uncle more than a few times as she plunged the churner up and down, up and down. Over and over again. She wondered if the butter would ever be finished. Her hands were aching and she saw the sun setting over the western mountains. She knew she was late. She churned faster.

Casting her eyes in the direction of her secret meeting spot in the corn, Penelope noticed what looked like a sickly green mist wafting above the tassel of the corn. It came in like a pea soup fog, thickly engulfing the entire corn field in only a matter of seconds. This was unlike any kind of storm Penelope had ever seen before. Her first thought was of her beloved, Kris Kreaper. He was in that...storm? Fog? Mist? Whatever it was, Penelope dropped the butter churner, hiked up her dress, and took off running towards the field. She had to know if her love was safe.

When she arrived at her secret spot, she first saw the blanket laid out, picnic style, with the basket of bread and fruit sitting on top. The fruit seemed to be moving, writhing, and for a moment, Penelope thought that perhaps the food had spoiled and was infested with maggots. An apple fell out of the basket, seemingly on its own, and rolled off into the cornfield. Something strange was going on. She heard a rustling in the corn and looked away from the basket of moving fruit towards the noise. Kris emerged from between two stalks of corn. At least he was dressed like Kris. He had Kris's hair. But that face was horrifying to behold! Blood red eyes peered up at her above two rows of sharpened fangs. He had no nose, or eyebrows, or really anything other than his eyes and mouth that would distinguish him at all. For a second, she was frightened, yet she didn't jump or scream. She looked deeply into the blood red eyes of the creature standing before her and she recognized that he was still Kreaper, he had just been transformed into something less than human. Kris held something up for her to take, and she accepted the corn ring he had made for her which was meant for his proposal. Her heart melted, and she put the ring on her left ring finger. She took a leather strap from her bag and fashioned a crude leash to put around his neck, so she could make sure he stayed near her where he would be safe. Kreaper nuzzled into her as she pet his head.

Things were going to be different from what she had imagined, but she would stay with Kris Kreaper. Fully human or no, he was still her one true love. She wouldn't let go of that fact easily...
